In connection with Frida Benzon's trip to South Africa to work as a model for a couple of months, we were lucky to meet up with her and have a little talk about her football career and the path to it, as well as the significance that the sport has had and continues to have for her.
Frida Benzon is a Danish model and professional street football player, and alongside her modeling career, street football constitutes a significant part of her life. We therefore asked Frida to share her thoughts on the importance of football for her.
"Street football has always meant a lot to me. I feel like I can be 100% myself when I play. The special thing about street football is that you have the opportunity to develop your own unique style, which also means that there is no right or wrong way to play."
Frida started her football career at an early age, and already in kindergarten, she was very passioned about football. However, it was not always easy to be a girl in a sport that is primarily dominated by boys. Her kindergarten teacher opposed the idea of Frida playing football simply because she was a girl. However, this did not stop Frida, who instead became even more motivated to play football.
"In kindergarten, my teacher did not want me to play football because I was a girl - but that just made me want to play football even more."
Street football has also had an essential significance for Frida's modeling career.
"There isn't a day that goes by that I don't touch a football. If it weren't for football, I wouldn't be a model today. Four years ago, I was playing street football at Rådhuspladsen in Copenhagen, where I was scouted as a model. So it all ties together in one way or another."
Frida has already achieved a lot in her football career. She has played on the national team for five years, achieved a world record, and placed second in the world in Panna, a form of football within street football where technique is paramount. Despite her already impressive achievements, there is still room for more ambitions and dreams.
"I would be lying if I said that I wouldn't like to become number one in the world. But I have started to focus more on enjoying playing football and developing my own style, rather than focusing on competitions."
During our conversation with Frida, it became clear what significance football has for her.
"Football makes me feel safe no matter where I play. Whether it's in Denmark or South Africa, I feel at home because it's my thing."
Frida Benzon is a strong-willed girl with plenty of courage and passion – make sure to keep an eye out for her.
